Can I start an IVF cycle during COVID-19

Can I start an IVF cycle during COVID-19?

We have received several enquiries from our patients asking:

“Can I start my IVF cycle?”.  The answer to this question is not straight forward – lets learn why!

Fertility clinics across Australia have a main governing body, the Fertility Society of Australia. Fertility Solutions are following the guidance and recommendations of the society, to ensure the safety of our staff, patients and the greater community during the COVID-19 crisis.  The key statement from the society is “commencement of all new fertility treatments should be postponed unless absolutely necessary”. What this means is that we will offer some patients treatment, but this will always be at the discretion of a fertility specialist.  You will need to contact a fertility specialist and discuss your situation with them. It’s possible that your situation may be determined as suitable to continue treatment.

Staying Connected and Getting Prepared

Fertility Solutions will remain open during the COVID-19 crisis. Therefore, providing our patients a connection with our team.  Our specialists are also continuing to see fertility patients.  However, the “new normal” is telehealth, as we all maintain social distancing.  Our nursing team are always happy to talk through your situation however due to the recommendations from our governing bodies, we will direct you to a fertility specialist who will decide the best options with you at this time.

Although treatment now may not be possible for some, it does not stop us helping you work through the process to prepare for treatment.  On average it takes around 2-3 months from first enquiring about fertility treatment to starting a cycle.  Therefore, you can use this time to work through the process of having your specialist appointments (telehealth), blood tests and scans.  When we are through the COVID-19 situation you will be ready to start your cycle and treatments straight away.

We understand that postponing or pausing your fertility treatment maybe very stressful and feels unfair.  However, we urge you to read the information from the Fertility Society of Australia and discuss with a fertility specialist your situation.  If you wish to speak with our qualified fertility counsellors, please email nurseassistant@fssc.com.au or call 1300 FERTILITY.

We will continue to communicate with you during this time and we encourage you to sign up to our newsletter if you are not already and follow our Facebook page as this is where we will be posting regular updates.

Our patients are our priority and we look forward to helping our patients resume their journey once this threat has passed.
