COVID-19 Questions patients are asking

Updated March 23, 2020

Fertility Treatment has not been affected by the recent Australian Government lockdown. We are therefore continuing to operate business as usual with precautions in place to minimise risk to our patients and our team.

We have received a number of enquiries regarding fertility treatment and pregnancy in regards to COVID-19, therefore Fertility Solutions would like to provide all patients with the following response.

Should I start/continue fertility treatment in the current environment in regards to COVID-19?

Answer:
• There is no evidence at this stage of the impact of COVID-19 on fertility treatments and little is known about the effect of COVID-19 in pregnancy.
• The Fertility Society of Australia released a statement on 19 March 2020 that read “At this point, there is no evidence to recommend contraception or cessation of attempts to conceive, either unassisted or assisted.”
• Fertility Solutions recommends that all patients are well prior to the commencement of any fertility treatment cycle and may recommend that you delay the start of treatment until any signs of infection have passed.
• If your cycle needs to be delayed or cancelled as a result of COVID-19, you will not be charged any out of pocket fees for this cycle. If you have started your cycle but are unable to proceed to egg pickup because of a COVID-19 related matter, you will not incur any out of pocket fees for your cancelled treatment.(cost will still apply for medications etc).
• If a patient decides to cancel the cycle/treatment the normal clinic policy applies.

Is it safe to be pregnant during a Coronavirus pandemic?

Answer:
• There is no evidence at this stage of the impact of COVID-19 on fertility treatments and little is known about the effect of COVID-19 in pregnancy.
• However, the Royal Australian New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists statement on this topic is the best authoritative resource. To read the full statement- RANZCOG.
• If patients have further question, Fertility Solutions recommend they contact their specialist.
• An outline of their statement is contained below in italics:

However, at this time, pregnant women do not appear to be more severely unwell if they develop COVID-19 infection than the general population. It is expected many pregnant women will experience only mild or moderate cold/flu like symptoms.
For women who are trying to conceive, or who are in early pregnancy, there is no evidence to suggest an increased risk of miscarriage with COVID-19. Furthermore, there is also no evidence that the virus can pass to your developing baby while you are pregnant (this is called vertical transmission). There is also no evidence that the virus will cause abnormalities in your baby.
